Volcanic snails may offer a solution to the challenge of global warming. These unique creatures possess an outer shell layer rich in iron sulfides. The interaction between iron ions in their surroundings and the sulfur in their scales results in the formation of iron sulfides in their environment. These snails are the sole known living organisms capable of integrating iron into their skeletons. Referred to as scaly-foot gastropods, they thrive in extreme conditions near underwater volcanic vents, enduring temperatures of up to 750 degrees Fahrenheit – conditions considered by researchers to be exceptionally challenging for life.
